FAQ

  • Great question! When I started my business, I went with Kathryn Hyslop Photography because it felt professional and looked super sleek on (imaginary) office doors. It had that “official” vibe, you know?

Fast-forward 11 years, and I’ve learned that “Kathryn” and “Hyslop” are apparently the ultimate spelling and pronunciation test. Who knew? 😅 Still, after over a decade, the name has stuck—like glitter on carpet—and it’s become part of the brand I love.

If you know me as Katie, you’re absolutely right. Let’s just say the name is part of the charm, and I promise it’s way easier to work with me than it is to say my business name! 😉

  • So excited we will be working together! First step is to fill out my contact form. Once I confirm your date is available, you’ll receive a proposal via email to select options.

After those selections are made, you’ll digitally sign the contract and pay the retainer. Then we are officially official and we can start planning together!

  • This question always hits close to home! Being in front of a camera can feel a bit uncomfortable for sure.

Part of my job is to help you through that feeling. A lot of my posing is action-based, meaning you’re moving around and interacting with your people - creating genuine moments and authentic reactions. Your job is to try to be in the moment, go-with-the-flow, and be comfortable laughing at yourself.

I’ll walk you through everything, so you’ll know what to do. These aren’t school photos. The best images come when you’re willing to dance in the rain, skip down the sidewalk, and lay in the grass. We sometimes have messy hair, leaves in the dress, and dirt on the suit. This is real life, and that’s what we want to capture!

  • The most important thing is that you feel comfortable!  So don't change up your style or wear something different than usual. Portraits are about capturing who you are.  Here are some easy tips to make sure you look amazing:

    1. Avoid stark or neon colors. These can leave you looking pale or add a color cast to your skin.

    2. Avoid overly busy patterns or fine lines.  You want the focus to be on you and your personality, not your clothes.  Anything too distracting can take away from that.

    3.  If you're having a family session done, try to coordinate, but not match identically.  You should pick no more than three main colors, and one accent (i.e. grey, ivory, navy, with a soft yellow accent) and try to stay within those colors.  Try to avoid too many patterns that can take away from the main subject - you and your family!

    4. A good way to see if your outfits work together is to lay them out together so that you can see them all at once.  Feel free to send me a picture of them if you want additional input!

    5. Neutrals (brown, grey, ivory, navy, beige, olive) = Awesome + Timeless

    6. Make sure you are all on the same level of dressiness. If one person is casual, and the other is black-tie, it is going to look off-balance.

  • Absolutely! - with a caveat.

For your family/group photos, we’ll actually make a list together on our final call before the big day. That way I can make sure it is organized to flow well and get people back to partying as fast as possible!

For other shots, I’m happy to take a few favorite requests to try-for. However, since I focus on candids, I suggest NOT having a large, specific shot list. This takes away from being in the moment, and my focus turns to that list instead of capturing the emotions of the day.

  • I’ll work closely with you during the planning phase to create a photography timeline that aligns with your schedule. We actually have a call to create your timeline together about 2 months from the big day!

On the day of, I’ll coordinate with your planner and other vendors to ensure everything runs smoothly. In all my years in the wedding industry, I’ve never made anyone late!

  • I’m well-equipped for various lighting conditions and have techniques and gear to handle challenging environments. My goal is to ensure every moment is beautifully captured, no matter the setting! Happy to share examples of weddings captured all after-dark.

  • For editing, my goal is to keep your photos timeless - not trendy. I love a true-to-life approach; capturing the real colors you put work into selecting. You won’t find sepia tones here - I love a crisp, vibrant look!
